Director's Welcome

The Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health is a Commonwealth Government funded initiative in multidisciplinary education, training and research. It commenced in 1997
and has grown rapidly to employ a staff of 20 people and deliver its programs over some 700,000 sq kms from Birdsville to Mornington Island;
from Camooweal on the Northern Territory border to Hughenden; from Winton to Barcaldine and Blackall.
With a Vision developed by its staff of “Instruction through gentleness”, the programs are aimed at providing positive life and learning experiencesfor students with an interest in particular in rural, remote and Indigenous health.
Currently with some $3.5 million infrastructure, MICRRH provides an excellent environment for teaching and living. Working in partnership with Queensland Health and the community of Mount Isa it has established the “Yacca Library” and a Research Unit at Tarabada House. These have supported the education and research programs of all health professionals and students in North and West Qld.
Students and young health professionals who attend learning attachments in the communities of the North West can feel confident in the fact that the staff and resources are there to make their time well supported and positive in every possible way. The excitement and challenge of exposure to the wide range of clinical material available are there to create the next generation of highly skilled and enthusiastic remote health practitioners.
All this in an area growing in economic importance against a backdrop of rugged natural beauty. Experience the colours of Lawn Hill gorge, camp in the real outback,visit the Simpson Desert and McKinlay Ranges, fish for Barramundi in Burketown and Karumba, drink a cold beer at the actual bar where Banjo Patterson had Waltzing Matilda first performed, stand by the Coolabah trees at the billabong on the Diamantina River where he wrote this pivotal poem, see Camel Races at Boulia and Bedourie, camp-draughting at Sudan Dip and Camooweal and experience one of the great rights of passage of rural Australia, the Mount Isa Rodeo.
As the Director of the Centre I would like to welcome all who come to learn and experience the excitement of practicing health in one of the most unique parts of Australia. Please enjoy your time in our Centre and Communities.
