Medical Delegation Myth Busting

Workshop on a framework for safe delegated practice in the Australian health system.
Mt Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health
December 13th and 14th 2006.

The future will require a more adaptable and responsive health workforce than that afforded by existing medical, nursing and allied health professional models.

While team-based care and flexible clinical task delegation are widely accepted in rural and remote areas, ambiguity about responsibility can leave professionals exposed where clinical practice falls outside conventional scope or the letter of law. As a result there is increasing interest in developing a framework for delegated medical practice in Australia as a means of:

•  assuring communities of accessible, quality and affordable health care
•  increasing workforce flexibility
•  complementing existing autonomous expanded clinical practice models (eg: the Nurse Practitioner)

Aims

This workshop will explore the pros and cons of the delegated medical practice model in the Australian healthcare setting - an important but relatively neglected policy topic in the national health workforce debate.

Participants include

•  Professor Andrew Wilson, Executive Director  •  Professor Ian Wronski
  Policy, Planning and Resourcing Division
Queensland Health
  Pro Vice Chancellor
James Cook University

•  Mr Bob Wells, Executive Director  • Professor Rod Hooker

•  Professor Peter Brooks, Executive Dean

Speakers will provide food for thought before embarking on workshop sessions to explore myths about delegated practice, such as:
•  It's illegal! BUSTED
•  You need a Masters degree!
•  We can't afford it!
•  They want to be doctors - without the responsibility!
•  It'll never be accepted!
•  They'll take over our turf and we'll all go broke!
•  We are dumbing down the health workforce if we let these people in!
•  Ambulance drivers should stay in their cars and out of the hospitals!

The workshop participants will help inform strategies for moving the delegation debate forward constructively
