Procedural Skills Laboratory

Skills Lab
The MICRRH has a dedicated Procedural Skills laboratory which is well equipped with a selection of trauma and emergency medicine mannequins, as well as basic teaching models for procedures and anatomy teaching.

The newer additions to the Skills Laboratory includes two State-of-the-Art Advanced Life Support Mannequins, namely Simman and Simbaby. Both of these mannequins have been generously donated by Xstrata.

These mannequins have a large range of abilities from such simply things as palpable pulses, breath sounds and heart sounds, through to highly interventional emergency medicine procedures, such has Pneumothorax Decompression and Cricothyroidotomy (sometime referred to as emergency tracheostomy).

These mannequins are being used to teach health professional from students through to very experienced senior members of staff in our health organisations in the Mt Isa Area.

To access the skills laboratory staff and students are required to contact Louis Peachey for booking sessions and are required to provide some replacement of the consumables which they may have used. When booking they should indicate whether or not skill support or training is required or if the skills laboratory is to be used for independent practice.

The skills laboratory was initially set up using a grant of $30 000 from the Office of Indigenous and Public Health, Queensland Department of Health. This funding has been boosted by large contributions from core funding of the MICRRH. Xstrata have also donated in excess of $200 000 to our skills lab facilities.
