General Information
Winton, situated on the Landsborough Highway, was one of the founding towns of the Australian airlines Qantas. Main industries in the area are sheep and cattle. Named by the postmaster, Robert Allen, in 1876 for his place of birth (Winton - Dorest). Winton is in the centre of Matilda Country, a diverse region in which vast Mitchell Grass plains are broken by magnificent coloured gorges and ridges.

Climate
Typical outback weather the Summer higest recorded is 38.2 degrees Celsius and a Winter lowest of 8.1 degrees Clesius. The annual rainfall 412mm .

Points of interest
Originaly known as Pelican Waterhole, Winton was first settled in 1875. The town is best known as the place that A.B. (Banjo) Patterson wrote Waltzing Matilda in 1895, whilst at Dagworth Station outside Winton. Winton is recongised as the "home" of Australian bush poetry, hosting the annual Bronze Swagman Award, one of the country's most prestigious literary awards.
