Location
Located on the remote north west coast of Cape York Peninsula, 650km from Cairns by road and the nearest police station is located at Kowanyama which is a 3 hour drive to the southeast.

General Information
Formerly kown as the Edward River Aboriginal Mission, Pormpuraaw was an Anglican mission established in 1938. In 1967 controll was passed from the church to the Queensland Department of Aboriginal and Islander Affairs.

Climate
Being a costal town Pormuraaw has a tempered climate with a recorded maximum of 39.5 degress Celsius in summer and a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius in winter. The annual rainfall is generaly around 990mm but can go higher when cyclones pass the area.

Points of interest
Edward River Crocodile Farm and its annual Queens Birthday weekend crocodile races. Birdwatching as some 170 species of bird inhabit the sea, savannah and wetlands around Pormpuraaw. The bird population changes dramatically with the seasons as migratory birds come and go. Some locals are the crimson finch, star finch, brolga, sea eagle, hawk, and jabiru. Fishing, situated between two rivers Pormpuraaw boasts terrific estuary fishing for barramundi, threadfin salmon, grunter, bream, among other species.
