Located on the Gulf of Carpentaria side of Cape York Peninsula, 600km north/west of Cairns.

General Information
Within the community there is a motel - style guesthouse and basic services such as a butcher, laundromat, supermarket with petrol and diesel supplies, a tavern, medical centre and police station. During the dry season Kowanyama is surviced by road trains from cairns and by aircraft during the wet season (which may last until May). Airline passanger services to Cairns,600km by air is maintained through out the year.
Climate
By late December the storms of the monsoons have usually arrived, isolating the community by road. The monsoons are regarded as the arrival of "nhawrr yirrpa", the Rainbow Snake who brings the life giving water to the land. During the wet season, which may last until May, the community is serviced only by aircraft, as all other access is restricted.
Points of interest
Visitors to Kowanyama should get approval from the Traditional Owners. The Land Office can let you know who to consult for approval. It is also advisable to contact The Kowanyama Land and Natural Resource Management Office to determine what areas may be closed to access. All visitors must contact the office before going fishing or camping. Both these activities are seasonal.
