General Information
Horn Island is part of the Torres Straight Islands group at the tip of the Cape York Peninsula, Australia's northern most point.
Climate
The climate is dry tropical with a very marked summer rainfall maximum. Warm ocean breezes keep tempratures between a recorded 17 degrees Celsius low to a 36 degrees Celsius high with the average usaly 26 degrees celsius. The annual rainfall last year across 131 days of rain was 1,722mm.
Points of interest
Horn Island had two gold rushes in it history (1890's and 1980's) and is also one of the few parts reached and bombed by Japanese planes during World War II. Today it has the only airport servicing the Torres Shires islands (the other island have airstrips), and its primary industries are pearling and fishing.
