General Information
Blackall, laying on the Barcoo River, is located approximately 1,050km north west of Brisbane, set amongst a clean green setting with the main street lined with beautiful bottle trees old-style buildings and lovely well kept gardens.
Climate
The most popular times to visit Blackall is during Autumn, Winter and Spring when the weather allows for cool evenings and moderate days. Summer conditions create a dry heat with minimal humidity.
Points of interest
Blackall is where shearing legend, Jack Howe, set a world record shearing 321 sheep in seven hours and forty minutes with blade shears (hand powered) that still stands today and was only matched with the introduction of mechcanical shears. The Blackall Woolscour, an historic wool washing plant which operated on steam from 1908 to 1978, is believed to be the only complete operation of its kind left in Australia, with the original steam machinery still in place. Blackall was named after Sir Samual Blackall, Queensland's second Governor, and was discovered in 1846 by explorer Thomas Mitchell.In 1885 Blackall was the first town to start drilling an artesian bore. Today, visitors can relax, refresh and revive in the soothing artesian waters of the Blackall Aquatic Centre.
