Bedourie/Boulia Remote Area Medical Simulation - December 2007

On Thursday the 6th of December, 2007, the Mt Isa Simman Partnership began its remote outreach program, with a trip to Bedourie and Boulia.
This signified the official inclusion of RFDS into the Partnership. The team consisted of Dr John Robson (RFDS), Sr Ruth Chandler (MIBH) and Dr Louis Peachey (MICRRH), along with Barry Grant (Simman). For this first run, RFDS generously chartered a flight and took care of the logistics of loading the simulation equipment onto a plane and flying the team to Bedourie and Boulia.
The team left Mount Isa airport at 0900hrs and arrived at Bedourie at 1030hrs, and transported the equipment to the Bedourie Health Clinic. The simulation equipment was assembled in just under one hour, and the scenarios commenced at 1130hrs. There were 10 participants for the scenarios, including four who had travelled from Birdsville to be a part of the program. As well as the health staff from the Bedourie clinic, there were also two local police officers and two people from council administration who attended.

The participants were broken into two teams, led by the Remote Area Nurses, and undertook three purpose built scenarios, generated by the RFDS based on
their experience regarding likely emergencies which these groups would have to deal with. In the middle of the session we broke for a BBQ lunch which
was provided by the Bedourie Health Clinic.
On Completion of the session, the equipment was packed, loaded back onto the aircraft, and transported to Boulia, where the team was met at the airport by the local Health Clinic staff and taken to the Boulia Health Clinic.

The following day, the simulation equipment was assembled and the seven participants were broken into two groups, again led by the Remote Area Nurses,
and the scenarios were run again.
At both locations, we found that the staff were grateful to be able to practice life saving drills, within their own service, locating the equipment from their own clinics to carry out the procedures. We had very good feedback from all participants, and it is our intention to repeat similar sessions again in 2008, as well as extending this service to Dejarra, Camooweal, Doomagee, Burketown, Normanton, Mornington Island, Cloncurry, Julia Creek and Longreach.
