On the evening of Thursday 20-10-05, the Team from Mt Isa RFDS attended MICRRH for a training session with Simman

The event started with a brief familiarisation session followed, by three scenarios, all based on real events that have been seen by the RFDS Team. To create a high fidelity simulation, three rooms were used to host the event. The Skills lab housed Simman, and the members of the team who were actively involved in the resuscitation. The controller was house in a neighbouring room, able to monitor the progress through closed circuit television. From this room the controller was able to control Simman's vital signs, as well as playing the voice of Simman, which the participants heard via the speaker in Simman's head.

The remainder of the delegates who were not actively involved in the care were able to watch the events unfold in one of the lecture rooms, on a large screen. The signal from the patient monitor and the CCTV were overlayed, thus allowing the audience to see not only the action, but also monitor Simman's vital signs as each scenario progressed.

The RFDS team, found the event to be very realistic, and a good test of their abilities. MICRRH hopes to further build this relationship, and increase the capture of our rural and remote health professionals as they practice those necessary life saving skills, in a safe and controlled environment. As this relationship grow, the MICRRH simulation team trust that with greater experience, they will create a greater range of scenarios, which will be able to facilitate learning across a range on emergency medicine presentations.

MICRRH would again like to thank Xstrata for their generous sponsorship of Simman, without which this service would not be available.
