Research Training in the Outback - PHCRED Research Roadshow held in Longreach in August 2006

Participants in QLD PHCRED Research Roadshow held in Longreach.
The first to two 'Research Roadshows' was held between the 28th of August and the 1st of September. During this event research skills development workshops
were held in Longreach, Tambo, Charleville and Roma.
The Research Capacity Building Initiative is part of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) program. This Initiative provides funding to University Departments of Rural Health and Disciplines of General Practice to support the development of a research culture within primary health care. Within Queensland five sites are funded including, MICRRH, the Rural Health Research Unit at James Cook University, the University of Queensland and more recently Griffith University and Bond University. These sites work closely together to deliver some activities as part of the Queensland PHCRED Collaboration including 'Research Roadshows'.
The 'Research Roadshow' concept was first implemented in 2005 and was very well received by primary health care professionals in Outback towns who would normally not have access to research capacity building activities. As such, we have continued to offer these events during 2006.
Participant organisations are provided with an opportunity to specific the type of training they would prefer with most sites opting for program planning and evaluation, writing funding proposals or questionnaire design. These sessions are delivered by experienced presenters and are usually based around activities currently underway within the organisation. Once again these sessions were well received with many attendees indicating that they were a useful learning opportunity and would assist them in their current work.
Research Roadshows or other research capacity building activities can be arranged for your organisation by emailing the Queensland PHCRED state-wide coordinator, Ms Denise Schultz or by contacting MICRRHs Research Coordinator, Dr Stephanie De La Rue.
