A workshop session in progress...

The Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health (MICRRH) has a role in developing the research and evidence-based practice skills of people employed in the health sector in North and West Queensland. This is being achieved through the Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development (PHC RED) program which supports research in general, provides training, and offers advice on individual projects.

An opportunity to host two workshops arose recently with the visit of A/Professor Gaynor Heading PhD, Academic Leader for the Broken Hill Centre for Remote Health Research University Dept of Rural Health. Gaynor happened to be in Mount Isa as a member of the team engaged in consultation on strategies and actions to address overweight and obesity in adults and older Australians, with specific reference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and people living in rural and remote areas.

The response from staff employed by MICRRH, the Tropical Public Health Unit, North and West Queensland Primary Health Care, and the Mount Isa Community Development Association was overwhelming. The two half-day sessions offered on the 24th and 25th of August, 2005 in the Conference Rooms at MICRRH attracted much interest. The first session addressed 'Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis'. Participants learnt some techniques to help them get the most out of their qualitative data collection. They also gained skills in three key aspects of qualitative data - writing questions, interviewing and data analysis. In the second session on 'Designing Questionnaires for Research & Evaluation' participants discovered hints about designing questionnaires that will ensure that the data they gather is meaningful and can be interpreted. The session was designed to be experiential and provided an overview of many important principles of questionnaire construction.

The workshops were attended by a total of twenty people from diverse backgrounds in allied health, training, community development and health promotion. Feedback from the sessions indicated that people appreciated the interactive sessions and opportunity to hear from someone with a lot of experience in qualitative data research. The written materials not only supported the sessions but will provide valuable reference material in the future. Nearly everyone found that the sessions were a great introduction but they would like to have more time to come to grips with some of the concepts and applications. The Research Unit at MICRRH has taken this on board and will look for other opportunities to go further with the excellent work done in Gaynor's August workshops.
