University Departments of Rural Health meet in Alice Springs to form 'Desert Health'

MICRRH, CRH and BDRH staff at the meeting
Senior staff of the Mt Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, The Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health and the Centre for Remote Health met in Alice Springs from 12 to 14 May. The purpose was to
discuss common issues related to improving health outcomes in remote Australia.
Professor David Lyle from Broken Hill commented that 'Each department is different, having grown over the past decade or so in response to local community needs. These departments are characterised by being strongly embedded in their communities."
"This is the first time these three departments have met to discuss common issues related to Remote Health and Indigenous Health," said Associate Professor Dennis Pashen from Mt Isa. "It was a productive meeting we agreed to collaborate across a range of educational and research activities."
These activities include piloting in Broken Hill a remote health management program run by the Centre for Remote Health; providing joint supervision of research training across the three centres; collaborative research; and linking educational activities utilizing Information Technology.
"We have named our collaboration 'Desert Health'. Our ambition is to harness existing and developing technology to address common issues, such as how to improve access to health services, through a virtual organisation across the three vast outback regions in NT, NSW and Queensland," said Professor John Wakerman from Alice Springs.
